This film by DW Documentaries is based on the French book La démocratie des crédules by Gérald Bronner, an influential professor of sociology at the Paris-Diderot University in France, who features largely in the film. The film itself is largely in French, but has English subtitles.
The film mainly examines how the internet, a technology which promised so much, the Information Super-Highway, as it was once known, should have become a widespread source of disinformation and uncertainty.
Although in the film it is not as clearly argued as I would have liked, he seems to locate the problem in the biases that the human mind has: laziness, groupthink, credibility amongst them, which makes the internet so easy to manipulate.
The film largely concentrates on conspiracy theories, etc. and why they are believed. I would personally have liked to see how this is playing out in the macrosphere, and being manipulated by politicians, media, etc. But it hardly touches those important points. But then Bronner feels the problem lies at a deeper level of human consciousness.
I don’t think La démocratie des crédules (2016) has been translated yet, but the earlier Belief and Misbelief Asymmetry on the Internet (2015) is still widely available for those who wish to delve deeper.
